Teacher sacked for act
November 11, 2004 - 1:22PM
An Australian man sacked from his job as a teacher in Hong Kong for appearing in an erotic movie has reportedly won an $11,600 payout from the school.
Mark Aldred, 44, was dismissed from his teaching job after the principal of his secondary school discovered he had appeared in a raunchy thriller called Naked Weapon.
Aldred played a Russian crime boss who has his spine snapped by the heroine, played by Hong Kong actress Maggie Q.
He also appeared on publicity posters staring at her stockinged legs.
When principal James Tsui found out about Aldred's movie role he sacked him from his job at the Holy Carpenter School in Kowloon and reported him to the immigration department.
After a lengthy hearing, an industrial tribunal yesterday awarded Aldred $11,600 as a contract gratuity, the South China Morning Post reported.
However, it threw out his claim for around $79,000 in damages and dismissed Aldred's claims that his sacking was unlawful.

Aldred, who taught at the school until November 2003 under a programme to raise language levels by bringing more English-speaking teachers to state schools, said he would appeal to the High Court.
"This doesn't clear my name, and I'll be appealing to do that and advance the rights of expatriate teachers," he told the newspaper. |
