By the way, if anyone could tell me how to spell freinds... I think its friend but that doesnt look right. (dyslexic)
Anyway, I got to thinking today about what we choose to do; which is, to jet off to a completely alien country and stay there for a year or more. Baring in mind there are people of all ages on this site I am very interested to find out how you guys met the people you hang out with most in your work country.
Personally, I didn't know anyone when I landed.
I met my friends through capoeira (martial art), going to films, festas, etc, in a library even.
To some people this is the most daunting bit and the bit that would make them never even consider moving countries. So - how do you see landing and having to meet people all over again and how did you meet those people? |

I've been lucky in that the people I work with are the people I can hang round with after work and socialise with at the weekends (similar ages, mentalities, etc.). Other than that, I can only offer a (very mangled) quote about university "The friends you make in the first week of university are the people you spent the next three years trying to avoid". Sometimes, you will end up hooking up with the sort of person you would go out of your way to avoid, just because he is an English speaker. |

| It's friend, you were right. The general rule is: 'i' before 'e' except after 'c'. I've still got this stuck in my head from primary school!! |

Through substance-abuse.
Partners in crime sort of thing. OH and spelling bees. (I defy any of you Philistines to find a spelling mistake in any of my 780 posts.)

I remember (or not) it as friends till the end.
And I know you're all thinking "whats a dyslexic doing teaching english".

I meet most of my friends through my school--my fellow teachers, most of whom are great people. I have also met people through the international center--people looking for conversation partners & foreign friends. And then there are the friends of friends. I am actually quite shy, yet there are still loads of people that I have found to hang out with.

Same here, I'm quite shy until I get to know people. I did however meet more people in a short time in Shanghai than I probably have in 10 years here in the states. Having a couple of friends living there did set off sort of a chain reaction type thing though. I went to the hash (weekly running/walking club) and joined a darts team for fun. Met tons of people.
Had a great time in pubs (usually the 'Roo bar). Can't wait to get back  |
