Hello,
I am writing this as a college student with two years of school left before I will receive my bachelor's degree in human ecology. I would love to begin teaching english overseas immediately after graduation, but I will have thousands of dollars in loans to pay off. Any suggestions on how I might travel/teach soon after graduation and still pay off student loans?

This is a question that comes up quite a lot in the forums; you may want to search through previous threads for advice.
My advice would be to find a job in your home country after graduation and concentrate on paying off your debts as quickly as possible. It is difficult for someone with no teaching experience to find a TEFL job that pays enough to both live in modest comfort and save up money for large debts.
That said, I have met people who have managed to get such a job. I know of one Brit who went to a small city in Japan, lived reasonably well, and still saved $10,000 US in 12 months of teaching. |

Yes, go to Japan, young man although you don't speak a word of their lingo; but who cares? You only care for yen, no, make that yoyo, i.e. American rupaihs; the Japs are dumb enough to pay any newcomer what they believe they are worth; and a newbie is worth more than a veteran because he has debts at home that need repaying.
Last resort: apply for bankruptcy... that's the way to go, apparently, in some New world countries!

As for Japan, you may want to poke your nose in the Japan forum, but I'll let you in on a few facts before you do.
The JET Programme hires once a year to send people to various public schools as ALTs. The pay is 300,000 yen/month (roughly US$30,000 at today's exchange rate), and you often get a break on housing. You have fairly minimal work duties, and you get paid more than most conversation school teachers. JET sponsors your work visa and pays your airfare. All they ask as a basic requirement is a bachelor's degree. Another similar program is put out by Earlham College.
How much you make and how much you save depends, obviously, on a lot of factors. With JET, you may have to pay full price for housing, or you might actually get it for free. Most positions are fairly rural, which will also lower your expenses to a degree. After paying for basic necessities, you will probably have more than 100,000 yen left over each month (roughly US$1000), so what you SAVE from this will depend on what you spend on everything else.
Do you mind if I ask why you would consider teaching English 2 years before you finish a degree in ecology, rather than plan for a job in ecology? |

I meant to write that the monthly pay is 300,000 yen (about US$3,000). |

Yes, I am at COA. I'll look into teaching in Japan.
Just to clarify, human ecology is not the same thing as ecology. It is, to put it simply, the study of the connections between humans and the world they live in. It isn't a science program (unless that's what you want it to be); it's a very individualized degree. I'm studying something similar to international development.

I don't know. You usually post fairly well. This is the first time I've seen you use such language. Do YOU think it was appropriate?
I have no idea what you mean by Rog/Roach, so if that was a non-PC remark, I don't recognize it. |
