Recently, I started a language exchange with a Japanese couple. The exchange changed into more of a lesson exchange.

I think my Japanese sucks, but they called me up tonight, telling me how amazed they are at my learning ability - and urging me to take the lowest level Japanese Proficiency Exam. (My version of it, is that basically, whether it's language/music/classroom learning, is that I'm just a good mimic or listener or whatever. When it comes to understanding mechanics or systems, burying my nose in a book for hours or whatever, I'm pretty mediocre).

They said that with a few weeks of intensive study I could pass the exam.

What I tried to explain to them is that while I understand the interest the Japanese have in acquiring licenses and certificates and taking exams to take exams - I need some kind of a practical motivation for doing so.

So even if I could pass it (which I doubt) - what would be the point. (I do plan to be in Japan for awhile but I am an English teacher and a writer for English language publications). I am interested in learning Japanese so that I can understand what people are saying at the next table, and so I don't feel like a toddler everytime I step into the konbini. But so far, that's the only reason.

The first test is really nothing. Even level 3 isn't worth much other than personal satisfaction. However level 2 and level 1 are accomplishments and if you can pass those, then you will be able to communicate. I'd save the money and go out for a nice dinner. Just keep on studying.
