Hi!!!
this is the first time i get into this forum... and is for telling a bad experience! I know a lot of foreigners working in China find problems but I would like to send a warning to all those who may consider to work in the place I do.
The name is Lanzhou Petrochemical College of Vocational Technologies ...and is located in Xigu district, in Lanzhou, Gansu Province.
My boyfriend and I started working there in November... since then we have only found difficulties. Asking everymonth our salaries maybe 4 or 5 times until they finally pay us, trying to pay us by hours (and on our contract is written we have a monthly salary!)
After no receiving any salary from last january (no winter allowance,..anything) we went to Foreign Experts Bureau (thanks God!) Thay said we were right and told them there was no way of "bargaining" with our working hours.. Then we listened things such a "you are a single woman, we did you a favor employing you" whaaaat???
so im just counting the days to finish our contract (next June) and leave to another province .
By the way, one of the workers of Foreign Affairs at this college had his own company cancelled twice by Foreign Experts of gansu Province , for working ilegally with foreigners....
anyway...just take care! (wherever you decide to work...) |

My advice to you is: cut your losses when you can afford it! That would probably be NOW!
Ominously, they didn't pay your winter holiday allowance; standrad practice is to hand out RMB 2200 towards your travelling expenses.
You can bet NOW that they are NOT going to pay your airfare!
My experience was similar with yours: I was hired for an 8000 a month job; then I discovered they were paying me by the hour, and the weekly workload fluctuated erratically up and down...
They wouldn't apply for my work visa either.
Finally I called it a day, losing my share in a prorated airfare and all the time I had wasted waiting for classes that didn't take place because they had been cancelled without informing me.
I went to the Education BUreau, and they too agreed with my observations; they were, on the other hand, totally unable to help me. Schools are relatively free and unfettered vis-a-vis supervising authorities. |

Swiss Cheese here!
I highly doubt that you're a qualified speaker of English...well, enough to teach at any rate ("standrad"? Not in my dictionary). Hand out 2.2K for travelling expenses? A return ticket to Canada is 10K (RMB).
What's an "Education BUreau"? Double cap excluded, I've never heard of one in China that dealt with snivelling FTs who were so naive and greedy as to accept a job for 8K a month and think they were going to get the coveted Foreign Expert's Certificate to boot!
Methinks, Ira, you should consider another position elsewhere while Roger should consider another vocation where adroitness in English is not necessary.
Cheers! |

| How did you manage to leave the country if your school was too retarded to get you your resident's permit? I would think they would have a bit of a hammerlock on you until you've go it. |

thanks for answering and telling what you think... (although there are people that feel pissed off everywhere)
My aim was to warn future foreigners that this college could employ.
If someone just feels interested in criticising me.. that person can always send me an email, instead of using the forum for trivial purposes.
Hope you all have good experiences in China!

SinoBear may or may not be an ethical animal.
However, he did suggest concern about the use of rather furry and fuzzy English by some English teachers on this discussion board.

Whoops. Just when it matters, I think your English is showing again, Roger
