Next summer I would like to travel to Japan and spend maybe 6 months or so travelling around the country. Whilst I am out in Japan I would also like to obtain some form of work which will help pay for my travelling.
What is it like obtaining casual work out in Japan without a working visa (although I have heard it is possible to obtain a working holiday visa).
I was hoping to travel to Tokyo and get a job in a bar or restaurant - are there many oppourtunities like this for westerners who speak little japanese. Are there many jobs avaible for westerners in areas like shinjuku or roppongi where I hear the nightlife is pretty good and there are many bars and nightclubs.
Thanks in advance for any advice |

with no working visa? probably impossible. You can only do jobs that your visa allows you to do and no other. Instructor visas only allow you to teach English. Working holiday does not require a sponsor or a degree and a working visa requires a sponsor and a full time job. Tourist visa does not allow you to work at all.

Bar work and working in nightclubs is strictly forbidden on the working holiday visa but that doesnt mean people dont do it. Lie on your application say you will go sightseeing on your itinerary and hope you dont get caught. Plenty of foreigners in the night spots my guess is jobs come through connections and experience. Few jobs I would think if you cant speak Japanese- how do you take orders and serve drinks?. Washing dishes maybe. |
