I was wondering how teaching in China compares with teaching in Japan? Do you save more money in China (I know it's more common to get your flight and accomodation taken care of)? Is it easier to get to know the locals, and pick up the language? I've heard both countries have a reputation for being a little xenophobic...

Is that really the case though? The average Japan jobs pays about 18,000 quid a year. Now, tokyo is about the same as, or maybe more expensive than, London. And you've got to pay rent and stuff out of that. Is it really possible to save much money on that?

in China on the other hand you've got far lower pay, but no rent, bills, etc to worry about, and costs are much lower.

I have been teaching in China for two years, and I have to say that you should easily be able to save 3500-4000 RMB per month no problem. Yes, if you sign a contract with a school you should be able to get your visa and accomodation taken care of. I've never been to Japan so I don't know how it is there.

Thanks for the help.
It sounds like it's a lot easier to save money in China. Do you know if the high cost of rent also applies to Osaka and other cities in Japan, or is it just Tokyo that will eat away at your savings?

I wouldn't be so sure of that. Judging from the quotes in this recent thread in the Japan forum, those working in Japan at an eikaiwa have about as much to save beyond rent an ammenties as I earn per month, if not more. I'm quite conservative in my spending here in China (I don't purchase many things outside of one or two clothing necessities and food), but unless I were in the city or at a much better-paying job, I wouldn't be able to save that much.

(This is also a good thread on saving money in Japan.)

If you live like an expat and buy many Western goods and brands, any city will be expensive. (My Japanese friends in Tokyo make less but save more than my foreign friends in Tokyo.) That being said, Osaka, Kyoto, etc. are all still quite expensive, but smaller cities (Sapporo, Sendai, Chiba -- from what I"ve heard) won't be as much.

In Japan my girlfriend and I both saved around 20,000 Yen (the equivalent of about 1,500 RMB) a month after all our outgoings and expenses (many in both cases). In Shenyang we earned 5,500 RMB a month each (and seemed to spend all of it just to survive in a way to which we had become accustomed). I think the most I ever saved in a month was 500 Yuan. You can't compare China to Japan.

I don't know from where the 18,000 UK pound that someone above cites comes from. We both began on vastly more than that, and we benefited from free accommodation, and even got flights to Korea as our completion of contract bonus, which was nice. Many things there are also really cheap, even cheaper than Shenyang - there's so much choice and their economy is so more mature. Also, the standard of living and quality of life are both much higher in Japan (in a different league).

Um, I just checked the JET website, their scheme pays 3.6 million yen per year. That's around 18k sterling according to the Universal Currency Convertor. barely enough to live on in London.

BTW I manage to save 4000 a month off 5800 in China, and still eat out a lot, don't really watch what I spend etc...

I was able to save much more in Japan, though I still prefer living in China.

Good point. JET are probably one of the lower-paying ones.

Westgate pay a similar salary to them, though.

I must say, I've heard that if you get extra tutoring on the side in Japan it will pay amazingly well, around 50 quid (700 yuan) per hour. That must be where the chance to save big bucks comes in.
