Two new cases in Shanghai
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Ministry of Health reported two new confirmed SARS infections in Shanghai yesterday, bringing the total number of SARS cases in Shanghai to four.
It also reported one new suspected case, dismissing one, keeping the total number of suspected cases in Shanghai at 15. Among the total, two were Americans and one was German.
The two new SARS cases are couple traveling from north China. They are here to visit their friend.
It seems statistically unlikely that out of 15 suspected cases, 3 are non-chinese.
Given that and the Time/Asia article on deliberate misleading of the WHO team, what are your comments on the real picture in Shanghai?
I'm sort of/kindof/supposed to be teaching there soon

HC,when you have nothing to say,say nothing. To the poster:we in the city know as much as you.It does seem remarkable that of the handful of reported cases, some are foreigners. However,in terms of the number of people arriving from HK and Beijing each day, foreigners would be more highly represented, and more likely to be SARS infected than the general Shanghai populace[two of the few cases in Australia are Canadian,as an illustration].However, what is even more remarkable,is that a city with very large population has so few officially reported cases, when the above mentioned have so many. The jury is still out on how much we are being told, but generally people are out and about, getting on with their lives.I know if the students here are locked in for another weekend there will be some civil disobedience. They rioted last year because the lights were turned off at 10.30! So the mood is one of very cautious optimism.I and my family have no reservations about staying. |
