Hello Everyone,

I am in the process of trying to find some inexpensive teaching material. I am trying to avoid going to a publisher directly as it is sooooooooo expensive. I thought I would try here first. Does anyone know of a school that will let me purchase books for a decent price? I am looking for a set of Headway and a set of Zoom or New Parade.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. I am in Guadalajara but I would be happy to pay mailing costsif I needed to.

Thanks.

Why not try teaching without a textbook? Your students will thank you for it, and you will develop as a teacher.

Right or wrong, it certainly is rather standard procedure in Mexico, isn't it?

I wonder, Ben, if Merida is like DF, GDL, and Acapulco. In the surrounding 6 sq blocks near any university, high school, or taco stand, there are at least 20 copy places. In DF, they are common to see outside metro stations in the central 500 sq blocks or so.

Copy, copy, copy, copy, and copy some more. I suppose it's good barring the legal issues surrounding it, as most people couldn't afford the cost of a new shrink wrapped version off the plane from Gringolandia.

I'm having a bit of culture shock here in Korea because all the kids have real books and I can't even use pirate copies of software at school.

My boss paid for a couple of programs I have been using for making materials, even though I already had serialz. It's a nice change though, not having to point to which of the people has a "blue" sweater.

I know where you're coming from on that one! Whenever I need to refer to something in our "required" textbook, I've learned not to use color as a reference. "The information in the green box on page 122 in your textbook" would cause most of the students to glance around trying to find someone who had an original instead of a photocopy (black, white & gray) of the book.

Yes, Guy, Merida must be like the other cities you mentioned regarding the number of photocopy places. They're everywhere! I suspect pharmacies (chemist's) are the only other kind of business that could come close in number.

Hi Bobbie Jo,

Have you heard of Dogme? It's about using little or no "teaching material" for language teaching. You didn't say what kind of teaching situation you are working in, but perhaps you could check out the following websites for ideas:

http://www.teaching-unplugged.com/

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dogme

I think the One Stop English website (URL?) has a section on "teaching with minimal reasources" or something like that too.

Good luck!
Sean Doggy Dog:-)

Those are good sites, Seanie. I have yet to see a textbook series that really addresses student interests and needs. A few years back I had a couple groups of 7th graders come up with a list of the elements that they felt would be necessary in order to justify a textbook's being used, and their final opinion, after spending an hour and half wracking their brains and discussing, was that textbooks simply weren't justifiable.
