Most kinds of mushrooms became illegal last year. The impetus came from the 'epidemic' of overdoses the year before (up from 6 a year to 38! (amongst a population of 125 million...)) and US DEA pressure. But they only banned whole mushrooms, so it's still possible to buy them in powdered form and there are a few species (very mild effects) still legal in any form.

Most prefectures had banned the sale of them earlier anyway, so the new laws did very little to change the situation.

Meanwhile, they continue to sell and prescribe medical grade datura extract as an anti-histamine. This country is just *so* entertaining at times...

As of a few months ago they were still selling what appeared to be mushrooms but they were not at all potent. Before they were outlawed you could get an awesome two person dose for about 4000 yen. After the law went into effect I bought some that looked just like the ones I had had previously for about 6000 yen and nothing happened. Interesting about the powder though.

What the hell is datura extract and what are the effects?
