And a very good point to make!

The worst scenarios I've seen are when newbies have had even a short run of setbacks. It can happen so easily - need to move to a new place, your employer unexpectedly holds your first months' salary, a minor medical incident. And, those teachers who have little to no financial backup can end up crying on streetcorners and begging from friends........
I know it sounds totally gloomy, and of course it doesn't happen often. But the few times I've seen this kind of thing, made a big impression on me.
Don't leave home without reasonable financial backup!!!!!!
If it means delaying your plans, containing your excitement, and saving up for a bit, it will be worth it.

Yes of course, we should plan ahead and be prepared if we plan on traveling or working abroad. And yes, most people think that it's crazy if we leave ourselves open to potential problems with no back up plan...

But I have to say...the rate on economical change is much faster than the rate of human change. "What the "beep" does that mean?", you are saying?

Well...us as humans have been venturing out into this world with little more than what we could carry on our backs since the beginning. Where would our society be if it wasn't for those venturous types? Even though times have changed doesn't mean that we have. Some people see it as a great challenge to go out into the world with only our wits to sustain us. Does this mean that they are out to get us or to disrupt the flow of things? I don't think so.
The world is still a challenge to us no matter how modern our society or how advanced our economy supposedly is.

A lot depends on which country you are going to go to.... I would definitely recommend having some financial backup - The exact amount would vary from place to place. I've been to countries where U$2500 could last you a year - here in London (not a big EFL destination, admittedly) you'd be lucky if you could live two months on it.

A return ticket and costs prior to leaving is essential.

If I decided to leave my present location/country, which is highly unlikely, then for the locations which I'd probably consider (Central American countries,) $2,000 - $2,500 USD would be sufficient, I believe. I wouldn't want to start out in any of those locations with less.

I think spiral78's post has some excellent advice for newbies to consider.

It depends how many dependents you have too. I have a big cushion, enough to purchase a small nation. OK, a little exaggeration. I would bring enough to get by on a few months and it depends on what kind of job you are getting into. Do you have a job already? What are they paying for? Furnished apt?
