I think you can get your bike on JR if you buy an extra 270 yen ticket. It has to be covered/wrapped to the satisfaction of the guy at the gate, and/or maybe whoever else sees you.

Ride it. Do it on a day off and you will find that it isn't that big of a deal.
Of course, everyone will tell you you are crazy, don't listen to them.
We once rode our bikes from Saitama to Tokyo Bay in less than 2 hours, the whole family!

15 minute walk to the station from my apartment.
22 minute train ride to school station.
5 minute walk from the station to campus.
--------------------
total: 42 minutes.
A friend who lives in the same apartment complex rode his bike to campus in 35 minutes.
The point is, if you know how to get there and it is within 15 train stops, you should be able to ride it no problem. I am horrible at navigation without an ocean nearby, so I would never attempt it |

Hi Nuchie,
Well, I can't help you with directions but I would reccomend staying on the main thouroughfares. You could easily get directions or the general direction from kobans along the way. I hope it's not a shopping bike because they can be very tiresome over the longhaul, not to mention dangerous, depending on your size.
Good luck and I would be very interested to know how it works out. Fwiw, I dinked my partner around several major cities in the world. Also, I fully agree with what Nismo said. Bikes rule!
Enjoy yourself,
