What's your beef with it, mates? On the surface of it I can't see much to worry about...
First thing: are contracts offered by EF any WORSE than contracts offered by Shanghai Normal University? I wouather think not!
Then, if EF get involved they may be able to introduce an element of quality sadly missing at CHinese public institutions of "learning".
This is not, of course, taken for granted... |

I guess it reminds me of Pizza Hut taking over my old University cafeteria.
One would think SNU could find find teachers without going to the KFC of teaching.
Now instead of hundreds of jobs there will be 1 or 2.
This is an EVIL trend and I hope it doesn't catch on. It's the Ronald Macdonaldification of employmenet in China. The beginning of the end I think. |

Hola!
I would quit and find another place of work. Do not work for EF or any other corporate chain school. Anybody who has been in China for over one year, should know the ends and outs of finding other employment, especially in a city as large as Shanghai. There should be jobs paying at least 100 RMB plus board or 150 an hour for private work. 120-150 is the norm here in Hangzhou, Shanghai is about 10 times bigger. There is opportunity and a life there, but you have to beat the bushes to get it (like Korea, Japan, Taiwan or anywhere else).
State on your contract what you will do and what you will not do. State how much you are willing to be paid. I advise newbies in Hangzhou to get a college job with a flat and network within the community for extra work. Not too difficult to make 8-10,000 a month with housing, working maybe 30-35 hours a week. Colleges do not care one bit if you "moonlight" just as long as your work at their place is satisfactory. EF will pay 5,500 for the same hours, plus space those hours out so there is no time to do other work. Then share the flat instead of your own independence.
Sounds like a bad deal to me all the way around.
