so i've been delegated the delightful task of teaching my students christmas songs for the holiday office party. when i was in school (geez, that makes me feel old), we were always taught a few christmas songs as well as the token hanukkah song. do i have a civic duty to emulate my wise teachers of yore, or would it be a better idea to stick strictly to christmas songs?

also, does anybody have any particularly intriguing suggestions? since the kfc golf cart type thing that runs up and down the city center main strip plays "jingle bells" and "we wish you a merry christmas" all year round apparently, i thought some less common tunes might be fun. if you can call it that.

How 'bout "Frosty the Snowman" or "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer"? Boy, if you could find those on DVDs to show your kids, I bet they'd heartily embrace the songs.

I brought Frosty, Rudolph, Santa Claus is coming to town, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas with me... I have a three year old.

As for songs... (I added the lyrics for those of you less familar with this tune... On a more serious note, I like White Christmas and Winter Wonderland.

How about "Grandma got run-over by a reindeer?"

Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer
(Randy Brooks, 1977)

CHORUS:
Grandma got run over by a reindeer
Walking home from our house Christmas Eve.
You can say there's no such thing as Santa,
But as for me an' Grandpa, we believe.

She'd been drinking too much eggnog,
And we begged her not to go.
But she forgot her medication,
And she staggered out the door
into the snow.

When we found her Christmas morning,
At the scene of the attack
She had hoof prints on her forehead,
And incriminating Claus marks
on her back.

CHORUS

Now we're all so proud of Grandpa,
He's been taking this so well.
See him in there watching football,
Drinking beer and playing cards
with cousin Mel.

It's not Christmas without Grandma,
All the family's dressed in black.
And we just can't help but wonder
Should we open up her gifts
or send them back?
SEND THEM BACK!!!

CHORUS

Now the goose is on the table
And the pudding made of fig (ahhhhh!)
And the blue and silver candles,
That would just have matched the hair
in Grandma's wig.

I've warned all my friends and neighbours,
Better watch out for yourselves.
They should never give a license,
To a man who drives a sleigh
and plays with elves.

Sing it, Grandpa!

CHORUS

So this is Xmas
And what have you done
Another year over
And a new one just begun
And so this is Xmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young

A very Merry Xmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear

And so this is Xmas
For weak and for strong
For rich and the poor ones
The world is so wrong
And so happy Xmas
For black and for white
For yellow and red ones
Let's stop all the fight

A very Merry Xmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear

And so this is Xmas
And what have we done
Another year over
A new one just begun
And so happy Xmas
We hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young

A very Merry Xmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear
War is over, if you want it
War is over now

Happy Xmas

Merry Xmas (War is Over) - John Lennon

Spot on, English Farce.
The exact song I was humming when I saw the thread tittle.
IMHO, it’s just not a contest which one to choose.

Do the kids really sing xmas songs??? I thought they only sang and only wanted to sing, Jingle Bells, Yesterday Once More and My Heart will go on. I tell them if this is the case then there will be no music in the class. Teachers come to teach you new things, we do not teach you what you already know. When I put it this way, then they say will you teach us a new song??

yup- I have seen hostility before when I dared to introduce NEW vocabulary or teaching methods!
"How can I improve my oral English without changing anything about myself?" is their real question
anyway I did Auld Lang Syne and O Christmas Tree in class today

When I was driving truck, we used to like chicken songs- it had something to do with "chicken truckers" who run hard and never stop-kinda hard to explain- anyway- I used to sing this on the CB- I came up with it on some long uneventful miles
sung to the tune of "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer"
more effective if you sound twangy and sad

My chicken got run over by a reindeer
I found her by the coop where she was struck
The folks was singing Christmas carols
No one heard a thing but her last "cluck"

Tinsel glistened in her feathers
But we found all the proof we'd need
Lyin' thar outside the coop door
A gaily gift-wrapped bag of chicken feed

It's just not Christmas without Henny -
can't remember this part but it would have torn yr heartstrings
you get the idea

Ohhhh she never got the present
I bought for her at the mall
I know now it coulda saved her
one authentic chicken crystal ball

sounds a lot better when you haven't stopped driving for 18 hours and singing it and annoying other people (SHUT UP STUPID) is the only thing keeping you alert
guess ya had to be there

If I were having to teach my students Christmas songs, I would teach them "Santa Put the Hurt on You", "Norris the Nocturnal Nutria", or any one of the other delightful New Orleans-centric "Christmas" songs from Benny Grunch. I can imagine that my South Park-loving NZ friend would be teaching his students those South Park Christmas songs and, oh, but I would pay to see the reaction to those!

On the serious note, I'd probably teach "Good King Wenceslas", "The Holly and the Ivy", or "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" (or even "O Come, Emmanuel" in Latin -- extra fun!). I don't hear those songs played often back home (or here), thus I'd likely not get as annoyed by them.
