I spent 2 years teaching up in Taipei at a Happy Marion (P2 class for those that know) and really enjoyed it. As well I did moonlighting with a business english placement service which I also found gratify. I have since been away from teaching for 2 years but I am planning a return, this time to Taichung. I recently finished the CELTA and would like to do more adult teaching at a decent language school this time round. After getting the CELTA and seeing what it is like to teach when you have resources and some assistance from skilled teachers, I am not sure if I could ever go back to a school where all they want me to do is cram their syllabus down the students throats (or expect you to design the whole cirricullum from a few outdated photocopies). With this in mind does anyone have any recommendations for schools in Taijung which have 'good' resources, facilities, and potentially assistance for bouncing ideas off of more experienced hands?
Thanks in advance. |

Gratifying and curriculum. Don't make me take out my red pens, buster. I never go anywhere without at least three red pens at the ready.
Sorry. I've been correcting compositions in the tropical heat for too long and I get a bit tense at the end of the day. ;}
But seriously folks, if you've got a CELTA, Ocean English might be able to find a little bit of work for you in Taichung. The downside is that there will be no ARC to go along with it, and the teaching hours are short, so the money is underwhelming. Also you need to have a scooter because you must zip from class to class. The upside is that the curriculum is acceptable, the administration is fairly professional, fairly respectful of their teachers, and altogether more pleasant than many other employers in Taichung.
The short hours are both a blessing and a curse. Because the lessons are tutoring sessions, commuting is a hassle. However, you can focus on the needs of a single student or a pair of students instead of the needs of thirty spoiled toddlers. At the end of a work-day, I feel like an educator, not a baby-sitter. That's worth a cut in pay. Also I have enough spare time to think and write.
The curriculum provided by Ocean English is better than many curricula. However, I know my students' needs and I have painfully acquired training in prescriptive grammar, so I spend a large chunk of my leisure time designing supplements to the curriculum. The administration asks to be kept informed, but they support my efforts, which is a welcome change.
04 23201188 is the office phone number for Ocean English in Taichung. |
