Hi, folks! I have a Nigerian friend who is married with two kids and he REALLY needs a job. He's legal here and has a university degree in Biblical Sciences. He still doesn't have a TEFL certificate but is planning on getting one soon. Do you think he has a chance to find a job? He doesn't have a strong African accent (I'm sorry about that, I'm not a native speaker, either, I believe it shouldn't really count, but it does). If anyone can help him, please send me a message. He would be interested in teaching conversational classes or anything anyone is willing to offer. He is a wonderful person who really needs help.
Thanks for your help, folks!

Tell your friend to contact:

Mr Halil Cil, Amerika Kultur Dernegi, Eskisehir.

There are always vacancies there, and they are one of the schools in Turkey which advocate employing non native speakers, because surveys show that non native speakers outsmart native speakers in grammar 90% of the time, and if you don't believe this, ask Mr Cil and Mr Ozturk to show you the statistics.

Mr Cil is a very nice guy, and you should not have any trouble getting a job. Last year the two most popular teachers at Amerika Kultur, Eski, were a native of the Czech Republic, and a British Citizen of Nigerian descent. Mr Cil is fed up (and rightly so in this case) with foreigners claiming to be teachers who know nothing about grammar, basic sentence structure, and other aspects of learning the English language which are essential. Last year Mr Cil employed a Brit. who had attended University in Britain, with a B.A. in History. When Mr Cil asked the British teacher (during the interview) how many tenses there are in English, the "teacher" replied - "two" - "present" and "past." Enough said about that sad example. The Brit. taught "conversation classes" there, but not for long, before students stopped attending his classes, and when that happened, his days were numbered in Eski.

He has different branches of Amerika Kultur in Turkey, in Eski., Antalya, Bursa and he is planning on expanding to the Big Bul.

Strictly speaking there are only two tenses in English, Present (I walk) and Past (I walked). All other so-called tenses are merely aspects of theses tenses, the 'future tense' is the present tense plus a modal auxiliary "I will walk". This is, however, an argument produced by Grammarians; the same group of people who spent much of the 19th century insisting that 'reliable' should be changed to 'relionable'.

Yeah, it depends how much of it you choose to label as 'aspect'. Students tend to be quite happy when you tell them there are only two tenses in English, but this is more than offset by their disappointment when you mention continuous, perfect, etc.

Eng. Time also hires non Natives.

Try Eng. Time Taksim they are hurting for teachers right now.

They've got a teacher with a major French accent, but she is quite popular with her students.

They also have recently rehired a teacher from Israel.

It's worth a try.

It's not just ET that is hurting for teachers at the moment. Most people who I have talked to(who are involved in recruiting) are also having problems. This is a good time for teachers to negotiate the best possible deal.

This is the time of the year, when many of those who showed up in summer for the first time start to think about leaving so they fly off back home never to be seen again. Also alot of teachers move from job to job.
As always Dec-Jan and May-June-July are the key times to line up work.
P.S tell your friend to try Avrupa Dil on Bagdat Cad .
