I have an unexpected day off on the 30th Nov. I was wondering if anybody has a good recommendation for a spot of hiking a train journey away from Osaka. I'm hoping to see some of the beauty of the season too.
Any ideas? I will forever pray for your happiness. |

Kobe isn't very far is it? Just behind Shin-Kobe station is some mountain... well known but of course I can't remember the name. I think some Japanese suggested it to me for climbing, but I've never lived within a reasonable distance to do so.
There's also the Higashiyama between Kyoto and Otsu. I dont' really know much about it, but if you got to the top and looked east, I assume you'd have a very nice view of Lake Biwa.

If you go to the main Osaka station (can't remember the exact name of it, probably just Osaka Station), take the express to Kobe it's only like 25 minutes away I think. Not very far at all. The last time I was there was at 6AM and I had just got off the overnight bus from Tokyo, so I am a bit hazy on all of the details. |

Hyogo:
Mt Rokko, get off at Rokkomichi on the Hankyu I think it is and catch a bus or taxi up Mt Rokko. Arima onsen is around that area too
Osaka
Mt Kongo is on the Nankai line from Nanba. Get off at Kongo station and Im sure they will direct you from there. Apparently its easy to get lost up there so take plenty of food and warm clothes.
Mt Koya way down in Wakayama. Famous for autumn leaves. Take the tokkyu from Namba and I think maybe Nankai goes down there too.
Kyoto
Hiei san that straddles Kyoto and Shiga. Cable car is out of action now on Mt Heiei. May be buses or take a taxi up the road. |

I highly rccommend Lonely planet Hiking in Japan. This book has some great hiking and backpacking ideas all over Japan and is very userfriendly. When I was in Kyoto I used this book to find a great hike that started next to the gin kakuji and took me above Kyoto on the Daimonji where I could see Kyoto and Osaka. In Kobe there is a national park that you can reach by tram and I know there are some trails there.
Good luck with hiking,

For those in Osaka or Kyoto, a lesser-known place I found is near Hirakata-shi on the Keihan Line. Go to Hirakata, then take the little podunk line that connects there and go east to the last station. The climb is easy and comes out at a little lake where you can paddleboat with your companions before making the return journey.
Sorry I can't recall the name of the place as I haven't been there in nearly six years. |

The line is the Katano line from Hirakata. Go out to Katano-shi. Not sure of name of the last station though. |
