Dudes and Dames,
Gunther is in serious doo doo.
I need to make a big confession. My previous post were somewhat, not entirely true.
I was in china 2 years ago, but for the past year, i was in Korea.
I finished my time in Korea, and wanted to come back to China. I was interested in working for Universities exclusively, but at this time of year it was next to impossible to find a job. My Korean cash was quickly being suck down.
Finally, a recruiter by the name of Kelly Yu got in contact with me and told me about a job in CHangzhou, The university of Hohai. She said that they needed a teacher right away. This is what I wanted, and everything seemed on the up and up.
This recruiter told me that the foreign office staff would pick me up in Shanghai and drive me to CHangzhou. I arrived in Shanghai, nobody there. The recruiter told me that they were busy, so I took the bus from Shanghai to Changzhou. Nobody was there to meet me.
I arrived at the school, and the foreign office girl seemed really confused. She said that they were only looking for teachers for Feb.
Now, I'm in Changzhou. I haven't got enough money to get back to Korea. I haven't enough money to get back to Canada.
The foreign office lady is nice enough to let me use her computer. She called the recruiter, but she won't talk to me.
I am really screwed.
I'm sure some of this is my fault for trusting a recruiter, but jeez. I really never expected anything like this.
IF ANY OF YOU KNOW OF DECENT JOBS THAT NEED FILLING IMMIDIATLY, I really need the info.
I need some help from the fine men and women of the esl world. GUnther's head is just above water..
Help me out guys.

Sorry Gunther, I wrote another post earlier and later cut it since I thought it was too harsh - but not before someone jumped in with a reply. The gist was that FTs should prepare for emergencies by having some spare savings on them, especially for start-up costs in moving to a new city or country.

That said, however, I understand what it's like to get into a jam and sometimes it just happens. I had all my money stolen in Thailand and was just about ready to call it quits, then my cousin helped out by sending cash. So it's good to have others to help out, because emergencies happen. But for everyone's sake, let's try to prepare more to have as few crises as possible.

Steve

I don't mean to burst your bubble while you're down but most unis are not hiring at the moment because it's the end of the semester. December is really the last month of classes in most places and they spend january preparing for the vacations and grading finals.

that said, there are a number of options available to you if you look really hard. Some folks have already given you phone numbers to call and if you still can't find something suitable, send me a PM and I'll try to hook you up.

I wouldn't completely rule out a UNI but yes it's one of the worst times to apply. (May would be worse!) If they hire you now they would be paying you to do next to nothing for the next 2 months.

Certainly if you go to the usual suspect job-sites there will be many we "need you yesterday" ads. I have seen ads as recent as...today...for jobs in Wuxi Nanjing etc which are not too far from you.

Hi Gunther --

If this is the place I know, something like Concordia Sino-Canadian College (you know, college meaning high school), it'd be in a nice location for you because it is right across the road from Shenzhen University. You'd be able to go over, say hi, and make your presence known. If they have any especially lousy teachers, they might even hire you for spring semester. If not, there's always making some guanxi that would help you for next year.

Hmmmm. How could this have happened?

Likely scenarios:

1.) (We know) Great Wall of Whiner gave fair warning you were on your way. Perhaps someone took that warning seriously.

2.) Someone from the school peruses Dave's ESL Cafe. Maybe they read your post about coming to town and decided the school wasn't worthy.

3.) Your co-workers-to-be laid eyes upon your stunning photo. Jealousy is a nasty, nasty emotion, and it could be your are suffering from its ramifications now.

Regardless of how it happened, you're in quite a pickle at the moment.

Have you called Maider yet?

Colleen

Hang in their Gunter. The one thing I have learned about working as an English teacher in ASia for the past 10 years is that highs and lows are more radical here . I had the same thing happen to me at Youngsai University in Souon . Signed a contract got a letter telling me to be there and when I showed up ; some professor looked out his window and said he didn't want me working there . I found out later he hired a young Canadian Korean girl who just finished modeling school .
So I think you made a wise decision in coming here . You have an incredible writing talent that Korea doesn't deserve . Korea is too small for such a great specimen of man as you .

Imitation is said to be the sincerest form of flattery, Lee Odden. I couldn't resist - though no one could out-do the fair Griselda of your avatar.

PM me for details.

First off let me say how proud I am of everyone for trying to help. Very good to see.

Second, the Canadian Embassy will repatriate you if you cannot get home on your own. Check out the Embassy's website http://www.beijing.gc.ca/ and then e-mail the closest one to you.

Best of Luck, update us with what happens.
