I'm just about to complete my CELTA in London and am keen to secure a teaching post in Istanbul. I spent some time there last year and have accommodation lined up in Sultanahmet. Any advice on whether its better to apply for work in advance or simply come out and look? Also, where's the best place to find jobs postings?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Michelle

I suggest that you should get a job before you go out . This is due to the visa situation. If you arrive in Istanbul without the work/residence permit. You will have to leave the country every three months. However if you have a job offer then you need to be In london and get your paperwork done in person at the embassy. Also schools that do this for you are usually better schools.
good luck

Thanks DMB,
I've tried applying for jobs with no response... Meanwhile, job postings seem few and far between. So I thought I'd head out, get a job and then deal with the visa situation later... Is that a bit naive of me? Sorry for all the questions! Us novices can only be led by the experts!

Thanks again!

Try popping into one of the branches of English time. They pay ok and are usually ok about teachers doing a visa run. Either to Greece or Bulgaria. On a few occasions I was able to find cheap flights to Northern Cyprus aswell.

Go to Bulgaria. there is a train at 23.00 every night with carriages to a variety of cities in Bulgaria and beyond. Go to Plovdiv. Enjoy the day in Plovdiv and then take the sleeper back. Round trip with sleper is about 50 Euro
