Hi All - I'm heading to China to teach - a newbie in China although i've been teaching in Asia for a few years....
Re: visas - i can't make head or tail of the posts i've read regarding work permits and visas so i'm hoping someone can help me out here in pretty simple terms - if that's possible regarding China!
(1) Do you need a degree to get a work permit in China? I don't have one, so what are my options?! I do have money but don't know how much i would need for a business or investment visa.
(2) What kind of visa should i be applying for before i leave home? i.e. is a business visa in hk good to work on and live on IF i decide just to do private tutoring in China?
Basically, I want to keep a low profile, keep to myself and not get tied down to an employer, esp if things don't work out - I hate a noose around my neck. I've been burnt in other Asian countries and altho' it's great to have a "bread an butter" job, I really don't want the obligation that goes with working for an employer who can cancel work permits without letting you know thus leaving you in the poo...
Many thanks for any advice.

The grammatically-challenged title of your post appears to be at odds with the content of your enquiry. My advice is to stay put until you have a better idea of how to ask questions. In the meantime, familiarise yourself with the search function.
Where are you, by the way? |

I don't recommend moonlighting in China. There are too many unknowns especially if your don't speak the lingo (try renting an appartment on your own or getting a phone line/adsl... you'll see what I mean). My advice is to try a and get a decent public school job with low hours just to cover your basic expenses. Whatever you do with your time after that is up to you.
Most schools will have no reason to cancel your work permit unless you do f*ck up considerably. Keeping a low profile is always a good idea but I can asure you that you are being watched one way or another. |
