Most of my tertiary-level students are intellectual vegetables - you can't paraphrase things for them to understand. They rely on TRANSLATION only.

And, I don't think highly of multiple-choice tests! That absolves students of the need to phrase their own thoughts.

I use elaboration based upon Movie Segments. For example, I've used the populist movie Titanic is TV-less university classes, as they'd alreadyseen the movie. We used the Bi-lingual Script/AudioTapes sold in bookstores here.

While they were practicing the role plays based upon memorizing the scene---Rose at the Railing Suicid-izing and Pro-Life Jack Persuading---I elaborated/morphed my own "Teacher" Role into that DIRECTOR. That is, I focused upon EXPRESSION. ENERGY.EMOTION.

"No smiling!!! Rose is DEFINITELY NOT SMILING!!!" The hi-achieving English students were surprised to learn that emotion-less fluency was attacked by the merci-less DIRECTOR.

As they got into the SPIRIT of the PROCESS, then we ELABORATED. They created their own Role Plays, based upon a suicidally-stressed student-on-the-roof-with-a-MobilePhone. Friends come. Lover telephones. Parents telephone...

word or sentence exercise

eg . hold up pitcher of dog

have student describe details? ie tell them to give its name, what it looks like etc. verbally to class

next day exam based on details

fill in blanks exercise:

No, I wouldn't hold up a pitcher of dog. It'll probably just get them thinking about dinner.

I think I get what you mean, and I can't see a problem with it. Giving them extra information then testing it is fine. My only thought is about class schedules. I only see my kids once a week, and for them to remember verbal elaboration would be a bit tough. But the next day or similar they should be okay.

Cheers,
