Can someone please give me an idea on how much a gym contract costs in Japan.
Thanks |

depends.
I pay 4000 yen a month, plus I paid 1000 yen for the i.d. card, which I must show every time I use the gym.
My gym is XAX, which is all over Japan.
The bigger the gym, the more expensive it is.

4000 yen! Bargain! My local gym is - wait for it - 50,000 yen to JOIN and then 20,000 per month for unlimited gym/pool/aerobics. you can cut it down to 10,000 yen per month but you can only go between 4.01 and 4.03 am on any day not ending in "y".
This is in a town about an hour north of Tokyo, where there are no other local gyms or pools. Needless to say I am not a member. |

What about jogging outside -- is it "normal" in Japan? Will people assume something is wrong if they see a 5"7' blonde running down the road?
Are community pools very common and are they good for swimming laps? |

Here in F ukuoka, I see people jogging quite often. Usually middle aged men, though. The always wear full nylon running suits- never shorts. |

I'm a member of Tipness in Tokyo... I pay 12 600 a month for unlimited use at any of their gyms in the Kanto area.

Look out for municipal gyms. They can be very good value. The one in my town costs 140 yen per visit (for the first ten visits a month and then it's free for the remainder of the month) and has a weight and machine room, and pool. |

Municipal gyms can be good depending on your needs. The price and quality of the gym depends on the municipality. Very cheap though.
I use gyms full-time, no time/holiday limit. I think Brooks quoted XAXs on a limited basis. I've used:
- a city gym (in Shinyurigaoka - 120 yen per visit)
-Tipness in Nakano (do not recommend - horrendously busy all the time). Can't quite remember the price but it was about 10,000 per month. Easy entry process.
-XAXs in Hatagaya. I believe it is 12,000 p/m. A heck of a process to enter the place, but it is the best of the 3 gyms for me. Great facilities and not particularly crowded.
In both Tip/XAXs, I needed to pay 2 months up front and some sort of entry fee. Sorry, my memory fails me here, but I would budget about 10,000 p/m for full usage of a commercial gym. |

Aqua78 - My local pool was clean and pretty reasonable at about Y200, but really not popular at all. It was always empty. The outdoor pool was even cheaper and fantastic in the summer. |

Are Tipness staff still super sensitive about customers who have tattoos? |

I depends a lot on which Tipness... I go to Shinjuku and the staff there are great. I often see lots of people with tattoos. However on the odd occasion I go to Ikebukuro Tipness, I always find the staff somewhat Nazi-like... and very sensitive about everything.

I pay 7000 for a daytime membership at Tipness. Most of the ones in the Kanto area are very crowded (the Shinjuku one gets absurd). My tattoo has never been a problem.
The nice thing about Tipness is that you can use any of the gyms in the area. Unfortunately, however, they don't all have the same equipment. I lift free weights and have to plan to go to the gym that has the equipment I'll need that day. None of the ones I've been to have a hack squat rack or seated calf machine, and I really like those exercises. |

I think this must really depend on where you live. I live about an hour from Hiroshima in a smallish city and my gym membershiop is 6000 yen a month for unlimited use of everything (and that includes a pool which is great for swimming laps). |

at XAX, people with tattoos are not allowed to use their gyms.
My membership is a regular one. Maybe it is cheap due to competition.

I was a member at a XAX in Chiba Ken. Nobody ever commented about my tatoo.
They were really friendly and perhaps just ignoring some policy. They were also hard up for business too.
I've never even experienced this problem in onsens. Tatoos are so common on young Japanese people.
Do they actually have this "no tatoo" rule written somewhere on their brochure or something?
Be polite, but if there any serious problems, such as non-refund of fees, threaten to call a consumer complaint line. Don't know the Japanese term. City hall "might" also be useful. No managment likes to hear from either of these places.
I mean once you've signed up and are paying fees would they be able to just turf you out? |
