|
|
I come from a country in Asia where English is considered to be a foreign language. I've been teaching English for almost 5 years at different schools and have a degree ( not in teaching English, though ). My best friend (a native teacher) has been encouraging me to try my luck in other Asian countries. He was a teacher in Thailand for 2 years and he told me it would be possible to get a teaching job there for a non-native Asian teacher. I speak with a British accent (really..really..you wouldn't think I'm an Asian lady if I talk to you on the phone) and I have letters of reference from my former bosses (and another one from my current boss if I were to resign ). I'm 25. However, the fact that I'm a non-native speaker and not having a TEFL certificate really puts me in doubt. I've been dreamin about teaching in Thailand for ages. Any information or suggestions would be much appreciated |

BB - was that helpful?? I think not...
Butterflyeffect - go for it!!! What do you have to lose? My advice would be to head for a country where they care more for education than money, and you should be able to find a job fine...
Follow your dream, and good luck!!! |

Do you want to teach for the experience, or for the money?
That depends on where you might want to go... |

I have trained successful English teachers who are natives of Thailand, Taiwan, China and Japan. Their insights into the intricacies of English grammar, syntax and phonology are always useful to the Asian students whom they teach.

I am teaching in Thailand at a private kids school.
We have a teacher here who is Australian but of Chinese-Khmer ancestry. It hasn't stopped him. Mind you, he has an Australian passport.
We have also had a Belgian, a Russian and an Italian working here. However, their advantage was that they looked the part i.e. white.
I knew An Indian guy who was teaching at a school in the country but he scored a lesser paying job.
Get in front of the right employer and I think you'll be OK. |

Thanks a lot for your positive feedback, teachers...I really appreciate it...Well..referring to some of your comments :
Money or experience? It'd be hypocritical of me to say I merely want nothing but experience coz I'll need money for my long term plan: taking a TEFL course and hopping over to another country in Asia. On the other hand, the reason behind the plan is because I want to experience teaching English and living abroad. Can somebody tell me about the average payment for Asian teachers in Thailand?
I also understand that most schools are very strict about their recruitment system (to meet their customers' demands). Does anyone know any schools in Thailand that employ Asian teachers apart from native speakers? |

Yes, there are Asian teachers in Thailand who are teaching English. So go and don't be so afraid. You want to experience life abroad, right. Fear nothing as long as you know you are capable of teaching, sharing and learning too. |
