My boyfriend and I have signed contracts to work at a small school in nagano. At first he was hired and the school rented out a 1DK for him close to the school. Then he told them I was coming along as well and soon after they offered me a job. In our contracts it says the school will pay for half our rent. Now I take this to mean they pay half of my rent and also half of his rent. Since we are sharing a small place originally meant for 1 person we are under the impression they will pay the full rent. Does this sound right?? We are going to ask, but just wanted to get some advice. . . .

No. If you were originally planning to split expenses with your boyfriend, that meant you were each going to pay half of the apartment's rent. However, with your employer's help, you now each have to pay 1/4 of the rent. The employer pays for 1/4 plus 1/4, or a total of 1/2 of the total rent.

But, hey, if your employer wants to pay for the whole thing, why argue?

Be prepared for cramped quarters in a 1DK, by the way. Very cramped!
