I'm a 23 year old Irish guy with degree and Tefl certificate hoping to go to Vietnam (probably HCMC) in January. Can anyone help me out with a bit of advice on a few things?
1. What are the visa requirements - is it ok/possible to work on a tourist visa?
2. I havent seen many ads on the internet for jobs in Vietnam (at least compared to Thailand), but I keep hearing that there are loads of jobs. Are there, and what's average pay like? I have no teaching experience.
3. Should I try and get a job before I go or would I get one over there easy enough? I don't really have that much money to be living off without a job for too long.
4. Most ads seem to specify only US/UK/Can/Aus/NZ nationals. Do Irish people (and South Africans for that matter) not count as native speakers?
5. Can anyone recommend any sites or schools to apply to?
6. Which is better: Hanoi or HCMC? Both for jobs and living in.
I'd be very grateful if anyone could help me out.

| I met quite a few irish blokes teaching in hanoi, both at top end and mid range schools. There's absolutely no discrimination against irish in hanoi, can't say about hcm. |

Don't worry - I've seen Swedes, Germans and god-only-knows what else masquarading as 'native' speakers here. The laws (are there an?) aren't as strictly enforced as they are in N-E Asia. You'll be fine.
Also, because of your qualifications, don't settle for anything less than 13US$ an hour, despite the fact that you have no experience. Experience in this profession comes quick. |

| I know a lot of Irish people working in Saigon. You won't have any problem. You can even get a pint of Guiness at Sheridan's. |
