i have read few posts reccomending various study books and CDs but can anybody reccomend useful software for learning japanese?

to get the Kanji down pat, you could head to your nearest shop selling software and find the kiddies section. There they'll have stuff that elementary school kids use at home on CD-ROM. I used one whose name eludes me now and it was a lot of fun and really helped me to learn new Kanji and common compounds. Relatively cheap too when you consider what dedicated CDs cost to people learning Japanese as a foreign language.
