I am going to Korea in the fall to do some field research (MA thesis) and would like to have the option to take on some freelance work as an English language editor and/or writer while I'm there - to help finance the trip. I do not want a year-long teaching contract as I'm not sure how long I will be there.

What should I do? Is there any way to do this legally? If I do it without permission, how high is my risk of getting caught (i.e. deportation).

Cheers.

J.

You might try the local English newspapers. Sometimes they need editing or even translating (if you speak French). This can be done under the table. Getting caught is of course a possibility especially these days, but I would still go for it. You're not going to be there for very long in the first place. I did editing when I was in Korea, but only as a volunteer. I had too much time on my hands. Good luck!

PS-What's your research about?

Thanks for the info. I do speak French too but don't undertand why the English papers there would need French language ability...? I was pretty sure the risk would be lower than teaching without a visa. Since I posted the question, I found out that those under 30 years of age, who would like to freelance in Korea should go for the Working Holiday Visa. Freedom to teach, edit or anything alse without being locked in to a contract. Too bad I'm 5 years too old.

To answer your question, my research is on the social effects of rapid modernization (sociology). Looking forward to going to Korea.

Try the Korean Board. It might be more helpful, methinks.
