Hi I'm new to these forums. I am from Victoria, BC, Canada and I'm going to be teaching English for Peppy's Kids Club as part of Co-op for UVic. I'm leaving on Sept. 16th to Nagoya for 2 weeks of training then getting placed up north to Aomori City for 8 months. Does anybody have some hints on what to bring and what to expect? I'm nervous cuz it will be the first time travelling by myself and the longest I've been away for was only 2 months. I'm looking forward to this opportunity and the great experience that should come with it. Also, I'm trying to learn some Japanese right now.. is it hard to get by with mainly English? I'm Chinese-Canadian too, so most people will assume I'm Japanese. Thanks for all the help. Wink

I'd say you lucked out with Aomori City. Not too big or small with some beautiful areas nearby.

Went cycling in the area this summer. People are super friendly!

I hope you like colder winters though. I'd bring winter clothing that's for sure. Tohoku (Norther Japan) seems to get a lot of snow.

A few grand would probably be a good idea too!

I wouldn't worry about travelling in Japan too much. It may be confusing if you don't speak the language but it's safe and it'll be an adventure for you.

Wink

Thanks guys, I am bringing Y60,000 and $2500 in Canadian Traveller's Cheque's. Aomori City is aobut the size of the place I'm from, Victoria, B.C. I was hoping to live in a bigger city like Osaka or Yokohama, but we'll see what happens. Do I need to buy an adapter for my AC switches? Somebody told me you did, but the guy from Radio Shack said I didn't?? Thanks.

I asked the same thing and some family friends just came back from Japan and said that there laptop and hair dryers and things worked just fine because the Japanese voltage is something like 100 and Canada uses 110 (or there abouts). Apparently only if the equipment is very sensitive is the performace affected. I can't tell you for sure because I'm not thee yet, but that's what I've been told.
