Hi everybody, I've been reading ever since JET visited my school and this is my first post! I applied to JET this year, but anyway, on to my topic.

I have a few friends that are somewhat interested in teaching in Japan, too. Unfortunately, they do not have university degrees. They do, however, have enough credits at universities to transfer to community college and get an associate degree within a year.

I am utterly confused with what companies allow an associate degree.
I know JET is out, they don't do it.
NOVA has that part time thing, but only if you are in Australia, us US citizens need a univ degree.
What about private? AEON, GEOS, etc?

Also, as far as the visa is concerned, I seem to recall that you may need a univ degree for a real working visa anyway. Is this true?

Thanks all

PS. yes, i noticed there is a recent post about a canadian asking about a WHV. Is WHV an option for Americans? Is WHV even relevant?

associate degrees do not qualify for a working visa. Americans and Canadians require a 4 year university degree. You can not combine two 2-year degrees to get a sponsored work visa either. This is an immigration regulation to sponsor a visa and has nothing to do with your employer who is simply the sponsor.

Simple answer: get the 4-year degree as an AA degree won't cut it here.

where are you from anyway?

Canadians can get working holiday visas. Americans can not apply for this but need a 4-year degree to get a work visa.

you can work PT or FT on the working holiday visa for up to one year.

Hmm... I just realized... One of my friends is Canadian. Smile
I had forgotten, he's an IRC friend.

My other friend is living from Chicago, which is where I am also from.

I curently live in Boulder, Colorado where I go to school. I'm getting my degree next semester, so hopefully JET accepts me.
