Any ideas how they calculate fines for expired visas? One of the teachers at my school wanted to know before going to the airport. I got the feeling the policeman on duty just makes it up according to how much he thinks you can pay |

Hi, I have an American friend who had an overstay of two and a half months, she went to the airport one day before she was going to leave the country and the guys told her she would have to pay 800 USD, yes, 800 USD!! She went crazy, called the American Consulate and they checked how much she would have to pay and said the right amount would be 160 million TL, on the next day, she went to the airport and other guys were in the office and told her exactly this amount: 160 million TL. They won't tell you the amount beforehand, so if you're trying to check how much it is, you have to say you're leaving on that day. These guys are very dishonest, at least some of them, so I would advise you to call your embassy and check how much you have to pay and go there like you already know it with a tough look and confident voice, if you know what I mean.
Good luck! |

I know of two people who travelled on the same day. One of them was a week over and the other was a year and a half over. Guess who paid the heavier fine? Yip the one who was a week over! |

A word to the wise. Not all the cops in Turkey are bent however if you do a boarder run and you are over due on your vise, your chance of being screwed over are very high. Stick to the airport, to much brass around for the cops to try to much. Also note that there is a list which runs down how much you have to pay. It changes according to what country your from and how long you have over stayed. The range use to be quiet low. Now prices have gone up. The last I heard was (I think) about 180,000,000 T.L for up to a year or more. Never Pay any Dollars its a sacm. In Turkey its against the law to talk anything other than T.L ( prices can be worked out against the dollar but not paid in dollars) |
