Does anyone know when Tet is in 2005?
Also this is from an old post from 2003 but how accurate is it?

Anyone interested in coming to Vietnam should take note that most private language schools close around Jan 8 and re-open around Feb .3 for the TET holiday.

Do most language schools close from early January to early February? Is early December a good time to find a job for after Tet? (if not, when is?) If I'm arriving in Dec, is there any point in trying to work from Dec-early Feb?
Thanks, Steve.

look on the net for when vietnamese tet is this year. last year it was around mid-january. you've pretty much got no chance of get a teaching schedule until after tet, and then things pick up quite slowly. i wouold say that unless another teacher has left and you can step straight into their timetable, you'll be on slim pickings for a month after the holiday. if you're going there now, i'd say pop your head into as many schools as you can, show your face check out their rates, leave your cv and go on holiday for a month.

Tet falls on Wednesday, 6 February (give or take a day). Most language schools will close on Sunday the 3rd and reopen two weeks later.

If you're already teaching here and plan to travel in-country, book your tickets now (!), although it's probably too late for train/plane tickets. Most teachers I know skip the country during the break.

Cheers

Paul

Lonley Planet says Tet next year falls on Saturday 9th February. Problem is my tourist visa runs out a week after that. Anyone know if travel agents will be open that week so I can extend it? If I get it done before Tet will the new one start from that date or from the day my original one expires?

Cheers

Sorry about that - Tet falls on Wednesday, 9th February. Most schools close around the 6th.

Huxter, most travel agents will be open for most of the holiday. The problem for you is that it's very likely that the Immigration Department will be closed or on very reduced services. I think that to be on the safe side you should extend your visa towards the end of January, perhaps the 25th or so.

I would expect that your new visa would be dated from the time it was issued, not from the time the previous one expired. However, this is a WAG (wild-assed guess).

Thanks for that Paul John.

It's actually me that messed up - I should've got a 3-month visa in the first place (for a couple of dollars extra). Anyway, I've contacted the embassy in Wellington and they can update my existing 1-month visa for a small fee. So no stress when I get to Hanoi and will be able to enjoy the holiday. Problem sloved.

Cheers

When Tet exactly is, is not the thee issue.

About 6 weeks before Tet and 6 weeks after Tet (more or less) things slow down, usually.

Because of the recent economic growth there may be less "dead time" or "slow time" because the parents and students will be able to afford enrolling and continueing their English studies, even after splurging on Tet.

However, if you are coming to Vietnam and need to work right away, I would wait until later April this year (2005).
