I arrived in Taiwan recently and have been searching for jobs in Taichung for the past two weeks. My guess is that each year a big new group of teachers arrive in late January for the new term starting in mid Feb. That being said, my guess is that it would make sense that there would be a big increase in people finishing their one year contracts soon. I've had some ok offers. Pretty much along the lines of what you would expect for someone with some but under a year worth of ESL teaching. For those who have been here for a while. Would you say it is worth waiting for a few more weeks? Will there be a noticeable increase in jobs out there? I have the money to hold me over, but I am kinda anxious to get rolling. I don't want to look back a month or two from now and wonder why I didn't wait for another month and just sub for the time being. Any thoughts?

A month or two. Really not a long time. If you can last, waiting might be the plan.

During Chinese new year (this year early Feb) everything shuts down for over a week. It's like Christmas day, only ten straight days. If you want work here before that date, be prepared to sit around during that time with no work. Also, that time will be a madhouse for travel in Taiwan as everyone is off and travelling to see relatives. Further, schools often will not start you until after the Chinese new year. Up to you, really. You can look now, seeing as you're here (I'm editing my post becuase I didn't notice you were here). The schools will be looking for people now, even if they don't start you until after the holiday. You may get work right away as well. Openings occur at all times of the year, though they may opt ot put off filling until after the holiday.

You are going to have a very hard time finding decent work until after the Lunar New Year (Chinese New Year). The last day of which falls on Valentines day this year.

My advice to you is to get on a plane to Thailand and wait it out on a beach. You will spend significantly less money sunning your self on the beautiful beaches in the Kingdom baking your brain in the sun drinking Mekong. Here in Taiwan you may be staying in some nasty hostel breathing the toxic air of one of Taiwan's below standard metropolis trying to finding a mediocre job that you will regret taking in a month.
Good luck and please read this,
