I know that the demand for teachers in Taiwan is high but I am wondering if there is a high season for hiring? I am assuming that the high season is before the start of the school year...is that in September? How early is it recommended that one go?
Thanks,

I don't know where you are getting your information from but you may be in for a small disappointment.
The summer is by far the best time to find work. Late June and early August tend to be the best times but that may not be the case this year.

Good luck.

A lot of the buxibans hire for a July 1 start date or an August 1 start date. By Sept. the public schools have have already been under way and most are getting ready for their testing. The buxibans try to start before public school. The peak hiring times are mid-June to mid-July. There is also a secondary hiring period in mid-Dec. There are some schools that run on a 6-month semester cycle. The worst time to look for a job is right before and during Chinese New Year. Some teachers have also found job shortly after CNY.
There is not a high demand for teachers in TW. There are a lot of teacher already here who want to stay and work. Schools generally have more then one applicant for a job opening. |

Girl Scout,
(I posted this on the Kojen vs. Hess thread.)
Would you recommend signing a contract with a well known chain school before arriving?

Probably ok, but with conditions.
Be sure you know it is the company itself and not a recruiter that you are dealing with.
Be sure of where you are going and whether it's somewhere liveable. This makes contracts from out of contry a no-go for most people new to Taiwan. If you are not familiar with Taiwan, it's best to wait until you've seen something of an area before you agree to work there. You could be agreeing to work in a dirty little town with few English speakers or fellow expats in it. IMO, the capital is best for most new people (for that matter, most people period) If it's a contract that will have you working in one of the big three cities here, ok; if not, wait until you arrive. |
