i'm looking to find things for an apartment cheaply when i get to japan. a few people have told me about gomi days. when are they and how can one find them?

It depends on the area you live in. Just check outside in your area and dig around what people threw out.

Look out for the 'sodai-gomi' (big rubbish) days, when people throw out furniture, old chairs etc. Some of the stuff is useable, but mostly its junk. Usually it will be once a month or so but the day varies depending on the neighborhood. The ward office will be able to tell you when soda-gomi days are, and if you are in a large mansion apartment you will probably see piles of furniture, bookshelves, old futons etc on the pavement out front or in some rubbish assembly place.
