Hi,
someone asked a similar question not too long ago, you might wanna look for that thread.
The consensus is that it is easier to get a job teaching English and French together than French alone. French is back in vogue because this is the year of France in China. I remember a few adds on www.thatsbeijing.com not too long ago from a few unis looking for a French teacher.
C'est pas facile mais c'est possible.

at my university english majors are required to study a second language when they are juniors (japanese, french, or russian). to be honest i'm not sure how high the demand for french is, most students don't seem to think it's practical. the french teacher here is chinese, however -- if they hired a foreigner, i think they'd want you to teach english as well. but france and china are improving ties, so the language might become more popular? maybe you should look up language centers or language universities. there seems to be a shortage of native speakers of almost everything except chinese here, so i'm sure you could find something if you looked. |

Listen, bugger, you don't want to insult me with your derogatory lingo, do you? J'aime le francais, pas toi, mon pote???
The truth is that French is taught in many universities, but it always is a second foreign tongue; this eliminates the problem of mediocre students: only those with really good English can study a second foreign language! Try and see for yourself! Every year I meet lots of French students at the Canton Trade Fair; not only is their French superb, their English is too!
Their CHinese French teachers are up to scratch, unlike many CHinese English teachers.
As for vacancies: any city that has a Zhongshan university (a university in the name of China's revolutionary Dr Sun Yatsen) probably has a French department. Here in Guangzhou, the Zhongshan Uni gets support from the Alliance Francaise who sponsor a French native speaker by augmenting her salary.
The Alliance Francaise can be found in several major cities, including Hong Kong, Shanghai, Peking, Guangzhou, and, I suppose, in Tianjin, Wuhan, Nanjing and other places.
In Xi'an there are at least two universities that offer second foreign languages (Japanese, French, German, Italian).
I am not sure about the need to offer English as a sideline; it's possible but not always necessary, I believe. |
