|
|
Turkey seems to have problems with accession to the European Union. The big issue now is the question of Southern Cyprus, and recognition of that area. The EU is imposing the recognition of Southern Cyprus as a condition of further talks to Turkey.
Erdogan says he does not recognize Southern Cyprus, and Turkish Foreign Minister Gul said that "it is out of the question for us to recognize Southern Cyprus directly or indirectly."
Talks are to begin on October 3, 2005, provided that Turkey signs the annexed protocol recognizing Southern Cyprus as a "State."
Knowing how stubborn the Turks can be when it comes to issues of territory, it is hard for one to envisage Erdogan and company actually signing this protocol.
Erdogan and Greek PM - Karamanlis reached a stalemate with the question of Southern Cyprus, with Karamanlis saying that Turkey cannot become a member if it does not recognize a member state.
Erdogan left the meeting in a huff, and we will see how things develop in the coming days. The Turks have no choice but to recognize Southern Cyprus. But in so doing, they will have to swallow a lot of their pride and principles, and that is something that Turkey does not like doing.
Talks might be delayed again, and the entire affair could take years, if ever, to sort out. |

But one has the feeling that the EU will always have some 'other condition' Turkey has to fulfil before joining the EU club.
Also there will be referendums in countries, with some countries like France and Holland, no doubt, voting in large numbers (majority) against Turkey joining as a full member. It will not be easy for Turkey. |

Guys, you must remember this has been going on for much longer than we've been involved in Turkey. This nation first applied 40 years ago. As the EU, I wouldn't have admitted Greek Cyprus at all after they voted to keep their island split. This is a problem of their doing, and the Cypriots should be expelled if they start causing any trouble for Turkey. |

Ghost this really becoming boaring,
You set out total mis information, and I end up fixing it.
Your post on this issue was at around 11,30 on Friday the 17.
The P.M had not yet made the decison to walk out, on the S.Cyprus. Then at 1.30 they said he would walk out and fly back at 3.00. In the end after alot of horse trading a deal was worked out by 4.30.
So please get your facts right. |
