There are more or less always vacancies, so a good bet, especially at this time of year would be just to go to paginasamarillas.es website, pull off the names of all the schools and send them emails and give them calls. Apart from that the websites of Segundamano (jobs, flats, cars, anything listed) and El Pais newspaper jobs section are also good. You might give Inmadrid a try, but their pages (seem) to be a little out of date sometimes. If youre asking this, does it mean youre overseas still? If so, I think that you may well have a lot better results applying from here with a mobile phone number and stuff, because here, as in many places in Europe, theyll often seem to only take you properly seriously when they know youre actually in the country. |

|

Thanks. I am applying from the uk as I'm reluctant to travel out without having secured a job (I tried this approach before in Paris unsuccessfully). Although advertising, most schools there just weren't interested or were vague about their schedules and staff requirements, leaving me unsure if I could get work or not.
And as I mentioned in another post, I am CELTA qualified but have no experience as yet. But it seems many European advertisers require at least a year's experience...
-Although you say there is work in Madrid, do you think I would have a good chance as a newcomer there?
-If I travel out to Madrid, how long should I be prepared to look for a job...a week...a month??
-Also, Are there many opportunities to teach General English and Young Learners as well as/instead of Business English? In Paris the vast amount of jobs were to teach Business English, which wouldn't be my preference.
If you're able to answer any of these questions I'd be grateful! |

Hello, Im going to try and give you a few answers, but I think you should also have a good look around all the threads here for more peoples points of view...
quote..."-Although you say there is work in Madrid, do you think I would have a good chance as a newcomer there?"... Theres work here, always, but you have to understand that its very bitty i.e. an hour and a half in the morning (8:00am) then an hour and a half at lunch (2:00pm) then after work (8:00 pm), all over the city. Theres often no holiday pay, and certainly none over summer.
quote..."-If I travel out to Madrid, how long should I be prepared to look for a job...a week...a month??" ...anywhere you go you should bring two months living money, the first to find a job, and the second to cover you until you get paid at the end of the second month, and some money to get a flat deposit and a mobile phone etc. Spain is relatively cheap, so you can get by on 1000 euros a month, so bring 2000 plus some money for extras. Of course maybe youll be lucky and not need all that, but its better to at least have that available on your credit card, just in case. A room in a hostel (I recommend Los Amigos at Opera, as its quite sociable) is only 15 euros a night) .
quote..."-Also, Are there many opportunities to teach General English and Young Learners as well as/instead of Business English? In Paris the vast amount of jobs were to teach Business English, which wouldn't be my preference." ... Youd be much better off trying for an academy here, the pays lower per hour (15 for business, but around 10 to 12 per hour for academy) but you get a block of hours all in one place and you will get lots of kids groups ands General English work. Also you can always give private lessons to people, theres a big demand here, but people here do seem to be particularly unreliable....
...well, I hope this helps a bit: dont come out here before the 10th of January, as theyre all on holiday until then. |
