As a foreigner, how easy is it to get a credit card from your japanese bank? What do you need in order to get one? Is it just too much trouble to worry about, or is it as easy as getting one back home? I'm just wondering whether I should get one from here before I leave, or wait till I get to Japan. Obviously, the charges would work out cheaper in Japan, as I wouldn't have to pay the exchange rate fee each time I use my NZ credit card.
Thanks for any replies |

Normally you need to have worked at your current employer for at least two years and they will want to see that you have some financial stability and a current work visa. Some like VISA and JCB will contact your employers to see if you work there. You will also need a Japanese bank account from which they can deduct the monthly charges.
Using a new Zealand card you will have to send money home every month and that will mean spending up to 3,500 yen on remittance charges from the bank. They will not send automatic transfers to your New Zealand bank. |

wow, 2 years huh? well I guess that's out then... I will be coming on a working visa so I guess that shows financial stability but may not be enough...
I'd really only be using the credit card as an emergency thing, not so much for spending up large on!! I'm usually pretty good at budgeting so I don't see myself getting stuck and needing to use my credit card all the time, but it's just a safety net I guess. so in that way, I probably wouldn't have to send money home every month like you said. |

It took about 4 months to get my credit card here, which I thought was an eternity. You certainly don't need a credit card in Japan, but like you said, great for a backup. When you want to travel out of the country, then it is great to have a credit card. |
