Hi
As you guys know from the last thread that Im planning to go to Tokyo, I want to ask where I can go to see snow or maybe snow board or ski somewhere close to tokyo.
Hokkaido is too far and going to be very expensive just for the transport (around 25,000 yen by air one way)
Im on a tight budget.
Cheers! |

The closest snow to Tokyo is in the Japan Alps,or more specifically Hakuba and Matsumoto area. There is also some skiing in the Shiga area and the northern part of Kyoto but Niigata is probably your best bet. Niigata is 90 minutes by Shinkansen from Tokyo but I have no idea about the service to the ski areas since the recent earthquake that disrupted the Shinkansen line.. |

You can take a shinkansen to Gala Yuzawa, one of the bigger resorts in Niigata. I think it's fairly convenient from Tokyo (but I don't know firsthand, since I live in Niigata), because the JR terminal is inside the resort lobby.
The shinkansen should be running out there. I think it was closed down around Nagaoka, and even that stretch should be fixed by the 28th.

This may be of interest to you:
a 5-day unlimited Rail Pass by JR East (goes to Nagano, excludes Tokaido Shinkansen that follows the western coast of Honshu, and Sanyo Shinkansen) is 20,000 yen
a return ticket from Tokyo to Nagano on a regular ticket is about 15,000 yen

You can also try www.hyperdia.com for schedules and fares.
I think the stop at the Gala Yuzawa resort is Echigoyuzawa. It's about 90 minutes and costs about 6,000 one-way.

Another good site to check out: www.snowjapan.com
I've been checking it nearly hourly for the past couple of weeks, waiting for everything to open up!
And I may have given you the wrong name for the Gala Yuzawa station... I'll try to figure out what the correct name is.

Edit: The correct name, according to snowjapan, is Yuzawa station, but the hyperdia site gave about a five-hour time for that trip, which just can't be right coming from Tokyo. It really is only about 90 minutes, which makes it very popular for Tokyo-ites. |

Great skiing and boarding but might be far. |
