I have an interview scheduled and they want me to prepare a 30 minute typed lesson and demonstrate 5 minutes of it. Any suggestions, ideas or good links? Thanks everyone.

sorry i can't answer your question. i only have one of my own for you, obi won, because i noticed the "nova housing" thread you started. i assume you've had an interview with nova. i have one on june 5th. any tips? how is it run?

I'm not sure how the Nova interview goes. I haven't scheduled one yet. Just trying to keep my options open. I heard, however, that the Nova Interview is basically an information session followed by a one-on-one interview. It doesn�t include a teaching demo.

Here's a basic format for a lesson plan.

1. Objective
2. Materials
3. Introduction to lesson
4. Lesson Summary
5. Conclusion and Review of Key Points
6. Homework

This is not a standard AEON lesson plan. I could get sued for posting that, but it should help you give order to your lesson. There is absolutely no need for your lesson plan to be over one page.

As for lesson ideas, I suggest you stick to real life situations. Use lots of role playing. Target specific sentences and vocabulary you want them to learn.

However more important than any of this is to be friendly and flexible. Be confident, but always willing to re-evaluate your position and appear eager to learn. And carry one very big smile with you at all times.

I did the Aeon interview last November but I can't tell you how to pass it because I flunked it.

I had taught ESL for several years in Korea and finished a CELTA course shortly before it, so I had some experience and training but I was still rejected. I did a standard CELTA style lesson. Maybe they didn't like it because it was grammar focused. Maybe you should try something more focused on a function like ordering food in restaurant.

I'm now teaching in Japan at a school that's not Aeon, and most of the students are studying English to travel, so maybe something related to foreign travel and vacations, for example, ordering food in an American restaurant, going through customs, booking a hotel room etc. Go to your local library and see if you can find any ESL textbooks. Sometimes they have the lesson plans for you. Just adapt something from it.

But this is just a guess because aeon rejected me.

(In fact of all the people I met that day, no one received the magic card and was invited back.)
