I wanna ask if taking the train is cheaper than renting a car from tokyo to nagano.
I found out that its like 20,000 yen per person return by train
and if I can rent a car for 6,000 yen per day plus petrol and toll charges
which one do you guys think is going to be cheaper and more convenient?

Nuchie,
It looks like Nagano to Tokyo on the bullet train is 8710 yen. If you go by local trains all the way, it'll be 4940. Those are one way, and the bullet train fare is a reserved seat. Take off 510 each way for an unreserved seat.
Check http://ekimae.itp.ne.jp/tra-bin/jrtrageng.cgi for fares. I think they're accurate.
I don't drive here, but consider driving/navigating/parking/etc in the Tokyo area. Could be a hassle.
