My passport is expiring in June 2006.
If I were to go in May 05, does that mean that if, in June 06, I decided to stay one more year, I would need to go back to Europe to get a new passport and new visa?Or can I get a new visa and passport from Japan when mine is expiring?

You get a new passport from your country's embassy in Japan. I would apply for a replacement passport from the embassy or consulate about a month before it is due to expire, the earlier the better. You can apply for an extension of your visa and when they ask you to come and pick up your new visa stamp (takes a couple of weeks) you take the new passport. Immigration will put a "shinsei" stamp in your passport saying that its being processed. show that stamp to immigration and they will replace it with your renewed visa in your new passport. You can apply for a new visa any time up until your old visa expires and you will still be valid even if your old passport expires.
