I am going to Thailand for five weeks and will need to leave the country at some point for visa reasons. Malaysia seems my best option but after recent events, anywhere on the west coast is a no no. Can anywhere recommend somewhere good to visit for a couple of days that is fairly near Thailand?

Ranong, up the coast from Phuket, is where most people from here go for their visa runs. You take a little boat ride over to Burma and back.

The west coast is not a "no no" - we are still here! See my comments to your other post.

While there was much death and devastation - please don't be put off by the continuing emotional hype of the television networks.

Visiting today or tomorrow - I agree with you - maybe not the best time. But after that - things will be fine in many areas. Phuket is still up and running. Khao Lak - though - maybe not be in good shape for several months. Krabi, Kho Lanta and points south - I am not too sure about.

I was actually thinking of coming to Phuket during the Chinese New Year. But then I thought Koh Samui might be a better choice in light of recent events. Will Patong be up and running by that time? Or should I head east to Samui?

I was going to wait a few days before inquiring about what the near term (February-April) effects of the damage to Phuket/Patong were likely to be. I was wondering if the infrastructure damage was going to be offset by a decline in tourism. Will it be a ghost town or packed silly? Maybe it is to early to tell, but I just wondered what other people thought.
