I'm currently living in china but will actually be in Thailand for the Chinese New Year. I know that there is a Chinese community in Thailand and was wondering if there is anywhere where it is celebrated. I will be travelling around so any information would be useful.

Hi Rej:

There is a large Chinese community in Bangkok located near the main railway station.

A few decent links with photos & information:

People also celebrate the Chinese New Year in Nakhon Sawan:

I'm now looking for accommodation in Nakhon Sawan over the Chinese New Year as I've heard it gets completely booked up at this time. Any suggestions? I'm on a fairly tight budget like most people, but everything I look at on the Internet is very expensive. I'd also like to know where the best place is to see the parades etc. I assume they are on New Year's Day but is there anything happening the evening before?

Hello Rej:

This list has cheap hotels in Nakhon Sawan, although I cannot recommend any of them personally:

http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/7153/hotel/hotelcen26.htm

And these 2 look pretty decent (from 855 to 1,131 Baht) & you can book online:

http://www.asiarooms.com/thailand/nakhon_sawan/pimarn_hotel.html (The Pimarn)

http://www.asiarooms.com/thailand/nakhon_sawan/country_lake_nature_lodge.html (Country Lake Nature Lodge)

During the holidays, you might face higher rates, so it's best to book in advance and secure your rate. Wink

today's $ exchange rates here: http://www.krungsri.com/eng/50/511.asp

As for what to see & when, my hunch is that you'll get the best tips from locals on the scene when you arrive, or possibly from hotel staff where you'll be staying. Thais will go out of their way to be helpful in that regard.
