I wonder what motivates people to apply for work in Saudi...my only reasoning would be for the money but long termers surely cannot maintain the view for that long. Money isn't usually a motivator in the long term. Then again long termers in Saudi often defy the 'usual'.

Why do you do it?

I believe that they simply run away from teaching in the US/UK, as it can be very challenging in terms of discipline, keeping up-to-date with new methods of teaching/learning, and the 'stressssssssssful' environment.

While here, as long as you have the right skin colour and whatever doggy ESL certificate, you are a king/Queen!

In many other ESL countries where the locals are active in getting rid of foreign sluggish labour, arrogant snobbish head case that you have here in the kingdom would not be able to survive long there. They would be easily spotted, smashed and kicked out!

Hoping that this condition will change soon in KSA......

Im all in favour of the Kings and Queens of the KSA being white westerners.

I for myself will be considering a $36,000 approx offer from a number of UK schools to go and teach Business Studies. the KSA is a good idea but only if you go and do the organic non-fungal teaching at the European Centre.. I will forever give the European Centre the greatest plug I'd ever bother to give any school in any country. I looked at British Aerospace and decided that i'd have to be brain dead to work there.

At the end of the test track, before i even get into cliches concerning roads, there is only the country in which you qualified as a teacher. Then all road lead back to that place.

If you are considering work in the KSA, apply to the European Centre (Jubail) - [email protected]

Apply if you hold

1. an MA or MSc
2. more than 5 years teaching experience.
3. know how to hold a BBQ

Barbarian,
Just curious - what are the positive things about the European Center?

To follow up on Barbarians relatively lavish praise of a Saudi owned centre. The european centre is managed by an eccentric Cambridge graduate in his early 30's. I only did 6 weeks there a while ago but he seems in control of most important matters and supports the teachers in what can be tough circumstances due to the level and natures of the students there.

The pay is much higher than other places around there, easy overtime runs from the tap and aside from some annoying staff members who clearly arent entirely well in the head it does have a good atmosphere.

Give it a try as Jubail city is a quiet seaside city with excellent beaches.
