I don't know, but it seems to me the young women in Vietnam like men to be a good bit older, like 10 years or more. Perhaps they think the older guy is more stable? |

They don`t like you for what you are (don`t kid yourself), but like the fact that you generally have deeper pockets and wallets compared with the younger guys.
Ghost has been there (H.C.M., Nha Thrang, Dalat, Hoi An, Hanoi, Mui Ne), seen it and experienced it.
The Vietnamese are the most pragmatic and money hungry people of the region (Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Burma), and they know how to go about making money. Some people call it greed, others call it ambition. |

Yeah, that is pretty much what I figured... the older guy may have more cash, the younger woman more beauty... a trade many are content with. |

I think many times it's a case of the woman isn't good-looking enough for a younger guy. |

Younger women are attracted to older men's money. Period. What young woman fantasizes about a graying, balding, cranky old man?
Vietnamese women are very romantic, but are also very realistic. They understand that all men are selfish jerks, regardless of their age. So if one is relegated to marrying a jerk, he might has well be a wealthy one. |

As long as both parties are happy, I don't see the problem. The young woman gets a great lifestyle & financial security for her & her family, & the old geezer gets the sort of attractive young girl who wouldn't give him the time of day back home.
Having said that, I can't understand these couples, and you see loads of them in VN, who don't speak each other's language & just sit there over dinner occasionally smiling at each other & nothing else. I mean, I'm sure the sex is great but you can only spend so long in bed and it wears off eventually... |

But just think the old geezer will not understand her when she complains! Remember the riddle: "Why should a married man not remember his mistakes?" Because there is no sense in two people remembering the same thing! |

I disagree! The oldest profession in the world is prostitution. Women all over the world seek a rich man. You see it all the time everywhere. I am not saying all women just most women.
Anyway you guys are lucky, I am in Japan and so the women here want you to have lots and lots of money before they even take a glance at you!
Just joking there are a lot of nice women here as well as the ones only interested in a rich man! This was an interesting thread! Thanks to all! |

I wholeheartedly agree these younger women just want an older man for financial security. You find these type of people all over the world, and it's pretty prevalent here in Canada as well among the Vietnamese population . But it's no surprise this is widespread in Vietnam where so many people are living in poverty. I feel some pity towards these girls who are probably emotionally miserable but I guess it beats full out prostitution...? |

I think Ghost's comment is too harsh. What he might see as greed, I'd say has more to do with survival. Try to remember that they make very little each month compared to North Americans and they have larger families to support as well. When you have so little, money is everything. It seems wrong to fault them for just trying to make ends meet. |

What are you guys talking about? I'm just 27 and the chicks love me. I'm Vietnamese/French living in the United States, cool huh? Seriously though, I just came back from a nice little vacation in Saigon, and they have an unbelievably materialistic society over there. It's understandable though. I saw all types of old dudes or not so great looking guys with some very nice looking chicks. Money talks there, that's just how it is. |

Ghost is quite right. My (now) ex-girlfriend is a first-generation Vietnamese-American (she was born in the States; her parents fled during the war). In any event, she took a trip to Vietnam for the first time a couple of years ago (when she was 24) and I asked if she visited any of her relatives (who she'd never met). She said her and her family avoided them like the plague; didn't even tell them they were coming, in fact! Quite surprised, I asked why. She informed me that if they were to visit them they'd EXPECT to receive lots of money and gifts. |

I think that story reflects more badly on your girlfriend's family than on her relatives. Call me old-fashioned but when going abroad to see family it's generally traditional to buy them presents... |
