Hell all,
Has anyone have any problem bringing a laptop and other electronic stuff with the Vietnamese immigration officers at the airport in HCMC? |

I've never heard of anyone having trouble bringing computer stuff in. In my case, I just didn't bother declaring my laptop. I don't think the local customs officials worry too much about non-Vietnamese visitors bringing stuff in.
However, video tapes/DVDs might be a problem. In the past, at least, these would be confiscated so that Customs could check them out. If approved, you could pick them up a few weeks later. I don't know if this is still the case, as it's been over four years since I last left the country. |

Are there plenty of internet cafes where one can hook up their laptop?
How about wireless?
What is the whole internet situation like in Saigon? |

There are a lot, but not a great many good ones. The best one is across from Cafe Latin on Dong Du.

I think Norfolk Mansion has it.

Overall, pretty good. There is a section of town completely dedicated to hardware and software. There are a lot of cafes, but I think ADSL in the home is still tricky to get and land-line phone services can by iffy. |

I've had a home connection for a few years now. I usually have to connect two or three times before I have a decent connection.
ADSL is available in most areas at a cost of around USD70 per month. Still too rich for me, I'm afraid.
I average around USD20-25 per month for my dial-up account but I mostly connect in the early hours of the morning when it's cheapest (like, free) and fastest.
Current rates at FPT (my ISP) are:
150 VND per minute - 0700-1800
120 VND per minute - 1800-0200
free - 0200-0700
There are also phone charges of 50 dong per minute.
150 dong, by the way, is about one cent in real money. |

If you're going to this part of town to buy software, I've found it's better to go with a local. The owners of the bootleg software shops are paranoid about being busted, and any lone Westerners are instantly suspected of being Microsoft spooks and not given a very warm welcome (no, it's not just me, other people have said the same)! I usually take my wife with me so she can explain that I'm a harmless punter... |

Usually I let my partner buy things for me. The sight of me increases the price. I find it best to go to one store - find what I want - then send someone else in to another store and have them buy it.
Just a quick note to the original question. I came into the country with my laptop and never even had to open it. |
