Thought I'd just about seen everything up to now, but nooooo ....

Yesterday afternoon on CCTV 9 they showed a program called "Dialogue" where the current topic was, of course, SARS. The actual title was, if I remember correctly, "Western & Eastern Views About SARS" or something to that effect.

Two guests appeared on the show. One was an American by the name of Jason Robertson from the Ping Xin Tang Clinic of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the other Professor Dominic Man-kit Lam from an undisclosed organization.

Well, the good news is that, according to Robertson, who holds many titles albeit not those of M.D. or Ph.D., there are at least eight common TCMs in current use any one of which, if taken, will result in a person being "no longer susceptible to SARS." Shocked

Not to be outdone, Professor Lam stated that even taking vitamin C is effective in "building a highly effective resistance to the SARS virus." Shocked

I'm flabbergasted! How can both the CDC and the WHO have missed the mark? Surprised

Ah, the same fine folks who last Spring showed footage of guys in white coats firing chemical shells into clouds and stated that practical, effective weather control was now an everyday reality in China.

Probably great news for the residents of Inner Mongolia, which at the time was literally drying up and blowing away, and for those living along the middle Yangzi valley and drowning in the torrential rains and floods.

CCTV 9 must have been and continue to be hard-up for news.

Oh, gee, I'm beginning to see a "surprising" trend here ...

Not only does the government in general have an inability to tell the
truth, but it seems like this inability has rubbed off on CCTV 9??

Surprise, surprise. Rolling Eyes

Well at least you have CCTV9 Here in Zhengzhou, still no CCTV9. They do have the best shows in China...Center Stage, Around China, Learning English, and somhalfway decent documentaries

That said, Dialogue has got to be the most PC program in China.

You're right in all aspects.

I never thought I'd be saying this, but CCTV 9 is usually much better than nothing. I mean, when the choice is CCTV 9's "Dialogue" or Hong Kong TV's "Tele-Tubbies", CCTV 9 wins hands down.

Can't understand why you wouldn't have it there. We have it inGuangzhou, but maybe it's because we have cable??

noyb--cctv9 seems to me to show the same 2 hours of programming over and over. If that is better than HK at least HK show the footie. I did see the Bozo show and wondered what this guy was all about. A white guy who is an expert on Chinese medicine. Take yer vitaminC and all will be fine. I wont speculate but the Chinese guy seemed to know what he was talking about. Although nobody knows what they are talking about. I have nothing to say just a "vote of confidence" here. It is a holiday so cut me some slack. (As Dr. Evil would say cut me some fligging slack...) Yours Truly Fat *beep*.

Please don't get me wrong. I did not mean to imply that CCTV 9 is better than Hong Kong TV (ATV or TVB) on a general basis.

But during the time of day (usually around 4 p.m.) that HK TV stations are showing Tele-Tubbies, Clarance the Train Engine, or any variety of the multitude of current "Power Toy" cartoons, I'm afraid I'd have to opt for /gag/ CCTV 9.

Yeah, the Chinese guy did come off as the more intelligent of the two.

So, excuse me while I megadose on vitamin C and go mingle with SARS patients knowing I am immune. Rolling Eyes

CCTV 9 is Government media and part of the propaganda machine. No surprise here.

TV 9 is now broadcast in the U.S. It is an attempt to portray China in a better light. In reality it shows how much China needs assistance in "developing."

The Deputy Beijing Mayor announced that most of the City's 8,000 doctors could not perform a simple tracheotomy! Heck, I can do that on Red Cross life saving training.

Do you get the picture?

Dear Comrade MW,
Thanks for telling us about the propoganda. I did not knowthat but I feel better that you told me. I will be more careful from now on. China can be dangerous but with your guidance I , all of us, will be able to make it 25 years just as yourself.

I used to tutor Liang Hong (Linda Hong) in English. She's one of the newsreaders on CCTV 9. You know the one who always stuffs up the phonics! (blame me for that!). Interestingly she admits fully that CCTV nine is a big govt. propaganda tool. No surprises there. But I think at least they interview foreigners, and sometimes they even criticise China or aspects of Chinese culture and development. Anyone who thinks China is not progressing need only go back a few years and try to find anything like that on Chinese TV then.

Actually, it seems that most of the newsreaders on CCTV 9 speak better English than the vast majority of Chinese English teachers. Or could it be that it's only because they have a script and they prepare hours after hours to get the script down pat? Egas, any ideas?

CCTV 9 isn't terrible, really. And there should be no doubt that it is continually improving. But sometimes it is really funny -- just like that episode of Dialogue about SARS. The real winner, though, would be the program that MyTurnNow saw about weather modification.

I think they practice reading the script a few times. When the Iraq war first broke it was obvious that they were struggling to read their breaking news parts.

My favorite thing on CCTV9 is when they talk about the 'peaceful liberation of Tibet' and the 'Socialist market economy with Chinese characteristics.'

When the 16th CCP 'elections' were held, every day for a week they'd give us a big list of every single congressperson (or whatever the heck they call them). 'The new 16th CCPCC members are: Wang wei yi, wang zhu hai, wang bing gao, etc. etc. etc.' I'm sure all the foreigners in China were on the edge of their seat watching that.

I just wish they'd show a episode of Seinfeld or something.

They sure didn't get their definition of "peaceful" from Webster's. Smile

You're gotta be kidding! Aren't there like hundreds of these people?
I can imagine that in the States at least (MW said CCTV 9 is beamed to the US) that episode must have knocked the Nielson Ratings off the scale. Laughing

Now that would be revolutionary!

Hey, I read something today in the Western press about riots in Zhejiang regarding some SARS patients quarantined in a government building. Some of the people living in the vicinity of that building got upset and stormed the building. Looks like it's starting to hit the fan there, too.
