Is everyone ok out there?
We read that Phuket got hit hard by a tsunami...I know there are many teachers out there.
Let us know you are all safe. |

I, too, hope to hear from any teachers from those parts. Terrible, terrible thing. Maybe one of the worst place to have a tsunami hit with the ocean being nearly surrounded by islands and other low-lying lands. (not that there is a GOOD place for a tsunami). Last I hear(read) 10,000 dead... staggering. I dont think we will hear from anyone from the area for a little while...
My prayers for all affected. |

The UK has offered assistance...they probably have quite a number of affected tourists. Bush has offered 'all appropriate assistance'. Good for Chavez.
I haven't heard Canada pipe in yet. I'm sure they are most concerned about their people vacationing in Phuket. |

This thread was started by the OP to see if teachers in affected areas were OK.
Please, let's not turn this into a competition about who's offering aid. This is a terrible tragedy of massive proportions.
It is shocking and shameful that anyone on this forum (you know who you are) would use this awful situation as an opportunity to attack nations for not giving aid less than 24 hours after the disaster. Our thoughts should surely be with the victims. The numbers of dead will soar over the next few days and even weeks as the full gravity of this disaster becomes apparent. |

I agree w/S-bag College, and statements like,

Waves up to 40 meters high--hard to imagine except in nightmares |
are hardly accurate. |

I agree with Cardinal Synn. 20,000 people are dead, and this thread is looking like it might turn into yet another heated political debate. Doesn't seem very appropriate.

The death toll is at 21,000 and still climbing. What a terrible tragedy. |

Tried several times since yesterday on the International Red Cross website to find out how to make a donation for disaster relief. Cant get on the web page they put up for it. (Ill take that to mean that the site is swamped ... a good sign doncha think?)
Any suggestions how to make a donation? Im in Mexico. |

Finally got into the donation site. Takes a while ... open a news page and read a while to wait for this page to download! If you are able to make a donation by credit card go to
http://www.ifrc.org/helpnow/donate/donate_response.asp
Im sure there are other fine organizations but this is just the one I prefer. |

Homer: The 40 meter high waves were mentioned on the Yahoo News site yesterday. I don't write the news on that site, just occasionally read it. |

I now am grateful to know my son (teaching EFL in Thailand) was not in Phuket but in a safe area (Samed Island) when tsunami happened & he is OK.
I hope others who want to know about friends /family teaching in Thailand can be helped with information on this site.

And a British tourist in Phuket was quoted as saying the wave she saw was 60 meters high. Of course she might have been exaggerating.... |
