I'm thinking about stopping off a few days in Japan on my way back to Korea from Canada this february, just for fun. Suggestions sought.
Not looking for big-city action or "must-see" attractions. I'm a lazy tourist who would like to fly from Narita to somewhere smaller & interesting, set myself up in a modest hotel for a few nights, & get a "taste" of Japan. Pretty countryside, maybe a hotspring, a friendly bar or 2 at hand, I'd be happy.
Cost not an overriding concern. Any little gem getaways you might recommend? (Not into winter sports. Is the far south mild in the winter months?) Thanks for any ideas. |

It sounds like you would really like Kyushu. I'd recommend somewhere in Miyazaki if you want the quieter tourist location. If you want to go to a city you can go to Fukuoka. |

I recommend seeing Shikoku Island, it definately has a beautiful countryside. I absolutely loved it there..very peaceful. And the pretty blue roofs on the farm houses were delightful to look at. Very good food there too, try their soba or udon.
Here are some links on Shikoku Island:

Shikoku Island
Resting in the isle-encrusted waters of the Inland Sea, with a predominantly rustic landscape, Shikoku is Japans fourth largest island. You can cross to the island by train or board a boat through the archipelago from Hiroshima.
Matsuyama is the main city and home to one of Japans best castles. Perched on a hilltop with excellent views, it has a stunning collection of samurai swords and armour on display. In Dogo Onsen, the citys old spa town, the public baths date back to 1894.

Some examples of the "pretty countryside":
Ps I've been there for New Years and during Golden Week (April 29-May5) and both times it was great! |

Yes, Shikoku is an interesting place to come if you want to see "real Japan". It's quite traditional here, but if you want big city excitement, then do not come here.
The two pix blue jay posted are: Ritsurin koen in Takamatsu and the Oboke Gorge (north/central Shikoku). Both very beautiful places. |
